Yes, but my hand looks great.

Yes, but my hand looks great.
I have a sore throat, so I’ll have to whisper this posting. Sharis brought home strep throat. Is that how you spell it, ’strep’ throat? I know it phoenetically. Is that how you spell ‘phoenetically’? Let me check….

Okay, yes, according to KidsHealth.com, which is my source for medical information, “Strep throat gives you a sore throat and makes it hard to swallow”. That’s what I have, no doubt about it. And it turns out it’s actually spelled “phonetically.” Consider me diagnosed, sore throat and bad speller.
I’ll try not to cough saliva all over the computer screen here, and just move along with some very important items that need to be discussed.

Family television review
Yesterday was Sunday, and Sunday is my TV day. I stop what I’m doing and watch TV, boldly and deliberately. It’s not as though I’m not watching tv all week long. Oh, I am. During the work week, I’ve got Hitler Youth and Cannabalism documentaries on the History Channel, various filthy vulgarities on VH1 and Maury Povich making people cry. By the way, any more RECENT instances of cannibalism? It’s always the same stuff, the Donner Party, Alferd Packer, Rugby teams in the moutains, and then Jeffrey Dahmer. Cannibalism is clearly on the decline. It needs some revitalization. If Jeffrey Dahmer was the Elvis of Cannibals, we’re looking for a Beatles now. Someone to make us forget about the old stuff. That was for our parents. We need a new cannibal superstar. I think it’s gonna turn out to be Tom Cruise. (see figure A)

figure A
What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Sunday tv. We’ve got a schedule: 9 PM is SIX FEET UNDER, 10 PM is ENTOURAGE, and then it’s a fastest finger race to change the channel so that I don’t have to witness one microsecond of THE COMEBACK, starring the wretched ‘Phoebe’ from ‘FRIENDS’. Never have I had such bitter ‘ENEMIES’. Joey, Monica and Chandler are my own personal axis of evil. They are the Wehrmacht. (see figure B)

SIX FEET UNDER was absolutely astounding last night. If you missed it, catch a rerun. The title of the episode was Ecotone, which is defined as the place where two landscapes meet, like where the forest meets the field, or the desert meets the grassland. The theme was introduced in the first few minutes, when a hiker is suddenly mauled by a mountain lion, and then it’s reinforced throughout the episode, with Nate’s chaotic marriage to Brenda finding a point of change with the peaceful, goodhearted Maggie. And then again with the liberal Claire finding friendship with the conservative Ted. And then again with dream at the end of the episode, in which Nate, despite being warned of sharks by his brother David, runs through the sand to dive into the ocean, never to reemerge.
It’s heartrending, beautiful writing, and it makes me want to give it a shot myself. It makes me realize that great things are possible in art. Too bad this series is ending. I like this new Ted character, and would like to see how he fits into the family.
On the other end of the spectrum is ENTOURAGE, which suffered from an absurd U2 promotional appearance, and some cruel and stupid jabs at the comic book industry. Where was the SDCC footage filmed, anyhow? In someone’s bathroom? It was obviously a phony set filled with pinheads from a circus dressed as comic fans, and a ridiculous ratio of regular fans versus costumed freaks. I’ve been to a few comic conventions…none resembled this. This was the fever dream of a very dull person. Also, Mandy Moore? Please, don’t ruin my show any further with this C-lister pop star. I just can’t pretend she’s this super-hot heartbreaker while I’m wearing my prescription glasses. Lenscrafter deserves better than that. And so does our Vince.
Enough has been said. DVDs for tomorrow?

I can’t take the lies! Actually, I did NOT bring home strep throat, I snuck around with it behind your back, in seedy hotels and Church parking lots after dark. I mean, I wouldn’t bring it home to you, that’s just too in-your-face. It’s no longer “descreet” if I parade it around in front of you. Oh wait…what I really have is something in my sinuses, not strep. And you should be honored and thankful to be married to such a sweetheart who shares everything with you, My Love, even my pathogens. All I know is that I can’t breathe out of one nostril, and the other one is all leaky. And my tonsils are the size of alley cats now. Man, this sucks! I feel like I’ve got Bob Villa using his new dremmel rooter-tool-thingie in my sinuses.
No, you can;t go get a burger, because I need you here every second, listening to my misery and complaints, and trying to supress a gag when you tell me that I “still look beautiful” with my puffy eyes and unkempt overall appearance.
Love you, Ethan. Sorry you got my sick. But your blog is effing brilliant!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where’s the GHOSTBUSTERS 1&2 love? While the second one is almost a methodical remake of the first, the original is Bill Murray in his prime.
I . . . will try not to post my stupidity very often. But you never know. Thanks for helping bring Hal back.

And here I thought Ethan was the funny one. Sharis, you had me rolling. I think you need your own blog, or at least need to comment as much as Ethan. Effing brilliant indeed!

Aw, thanks, Shannon. Nah, we didn’t give it to Hunter…yet. He’s a hardy little guy, and he doesn’t like to share things like germs. Smart kid, dunno where he gets it from
But we are supposed to be on a flight to Brazil in 6 days, and I’m getting a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that we might not make it. Or maybe that’s just because I took antibiotics on an empty stomach. Either way, it’s not muito bem. Oh, and let me just say how much fun it is to get out of bed in the morning and cough up a lots of fun colors! It’s like Satan crapped a rainbow in my sinuses…yay!
I want my mommy.

Thin Man collection is a definite MUST HAVE! Some of my favorite films, right there. Sure, the quality declines in each passing one, but they’re still better than most of the drivel being shoveled into the filmmaking machine these days.
Go get those and snuggle up in a comfy place and get to feeling better with Nick and Nora.

Hi Sharis! Ethan said you mailed me back my envelope last week, so I just wanted to say THANKS very much! Hope you get better soon and say “hey” again sometime.
All the best,

Van Sciver, I thought you’d be mad for “Downfall” on DVD! Any guy who name-drops the wehrmacht in his blog is certain to like this account of der fuhrer’s last days…
And, I, uh…actually HAVE that ‘Burial Ground’ disc you referenced. It’s great though, so LAY OFF! If you haven’t seen it, it has the creepiest man-child in it in movie history. FACT!

Sharis, I hope you guys get better so you can make your trip! I’m off to WWChi this Thursday. Should be a good time! I’m hoping to make it to the Texas show in November as well. Have to see. I will be at the Tampa Comic show November 20th though.

Marc:
Hmm…I didn’t know what Downfall was about! I’ll look into it, although I’m not doing much WW2 research yet. I sort of go backwards, find a weird historical thing and become obsessed with it. It started with Watergate, and I read and saw everything about that, then the JFK assassination, then Civil Rights, and right now I’m obsessed with anti-communism and the beginning of the Cold War. (you might notice some of that here on this blog!) I’ll be here for a while, since there’s so much to obsess about. World War 2 and Nazism is such a huge topic. I’ll get around to that, but I’ll probably skip around to the 1930’s, the Depression and Huey Long first, since that’ll provide a better frame of reference for what happened. I’m very much an American history junkie. Ask Sharis.
